Medicare Enrollment Guide

If you’re approaching age 65, now is the time to start planning your Medicare enrollment. As your Medicare Insurance Broker, Medicare Rich helps clients understand when to enroll, what coverage to choose, and how to avoid costly penalties. Whether you live in South Jersey, Philly, Atlanta or any of the other states I serve, my goal is to make your transition into Medicare smooth and stress-free.

WHEN CAN YOU ENROLL INTO MEDICARE?

01

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Starts 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.

02

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

For those who delay Medicare because they have employer coverage. Enroll without penalty after your coverage ends.

03

Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

October 15 to December 7 each year, which is the main annual window when anyone with Medicare can join, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage or Part D plans.

04

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

January 1 to March 31 each year, when you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.

STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE ENROLLMENT

Confirm Eligibility

Most people qualify at 65 through their work history, but others may qualify earlier due to disability.

Decide Between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage

This choice impacts how you receive your coverage, your costs, and your provider access.

Consider A Supplement Plan

Medigap can help cover expenses Original Medicare doesn’t.

Add Prescription Coverage

Even if you don’t take medications now, enrolling in Part D helps you avoid future penalties.

What to watch out for

Late Enrollment Penalty

These can be permanent, adding to your premiums for life.

Coverage Gaps

Not having drug coverage or supplement insurance can mean higher out-of-pocket costs.

Timing Issues

Missing your enrollment window can leave you without coverage for months.
